IMPORTANT - WORKSHOP CLOSING Some of my regular customers will be aware that I have been struggling for the last couple of years with persistent injury problems. I now have rotator cuff issues in both shoulders, an old back injury which has resurfaced, and arthritis from wielding big club hammers for too long. It has been a tough winter and I have finally had to accept that I cannot keep doing the heavy stuff for much longer. In the Autumn I will be relocating to Lincolnshire and a much smaller workshop where I will concentrate on rebuilding major mechanical components (engines, transmissions, axles) primarily for people who are rebuilding classic Land Rovers at home and need some help with the oily bits. Time permitting I will work my way through the engines and gearboxes I have been hoarding for years, offer these for sale and (if they sell well) buy in other suitable units to rebuild. Other services I may be offering include pre-purchase vehicle inspection, restoration advice / help and the like. I will still be selling my very popular engine mounts and E10-compatible Series carburettors, doing 200TDi flywheel housing conversions and gradually working through my huge stash of used spares and selling them on eBay. My workshop tenancy finishes at the end of September and I have a lot to get through before then. If your job is already in the diary, no problem. But I regret that I am no longer able to accept any work from new customers, or on new vehicles from existing customers. I will do my best to fit in service and MoT work for existing customers as long as I can, but I cannot make any promises at this point. I really thought I had another ten years' work in me and it has been tough to accept that old age (and many years of bad working practices in cold, draughty, poorly equipped premises) has caught up with me. I am incredibly grateful to all the customers who have kept coming back to me year after year: you guys are the very best and I feel really guilty to let you all down. But at this point I don't have many options. I'm not that far off finding myself in a situation where I get half way through a major job and find I don't have the physical ability to finish it. My own story is being repeated across the classic car industry. Almost every week I hear of another long-established business closing as the people behind it have just got too old to keep it going. I'd like to think that somewhere in Norfolk there is a small, low-profile classic Land Rover repair business in the same position I was in twenty years ago: if this is you, get in touch and see if you can convince me to recommend you to my customers. Big thank you to everyone who has entrusted me with their vehicles over the years. It's been a lot of fun: but I always said that if the job stopped being fun I would stop doing it, and having to dose up on heavy duty painkillers just to get through the day isn't much fun. Keep driving those old beasts, use them every day, love and cherish them. There is no finer vehicle on Earth than an old Land Rover. Best wishes, Richard Hall 18th April 2025
